How do I request police records in Ontario?
Under MFIPPA (Municipal Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act), submit a written request to the police service's FOI coordinator. Include your full name, the date of the incident, any reference numbers, and a clear description of the records you seek. A $5 CAD filing fee applies.
What is an ITO and can I request it?
An ITO (Information to Obtain) is a sworn document used to obtain a search or arrest warrant. ITOs may be accessible once unsealed by the court. You can request access through the court registry where the warrant was issued.
How long does an MFIPPA request take?
Ontario institutions must respond within 45 business days of receiving your request (FIPPA s. 26; MFIPPA s. 19, as amended in force July 1, 2026; it was 30 calendar days before that). Extensions are possible but must be justified in writing. If the institution fails to respond, you can file a complaint with the Information and Privacy Commissioner of Ontario (IPC).
